Chairmans Annual Report 2024

Val opening the evening in Annie’s absence

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the 34th AGM & Prize giving evening.

I’m sorry to say that unfortunately our lovely Chairlady Annie cannot be with us this evening. Very sadly Annie’s husband Tom, passed away a few days ago. I’m sure you will all join me in taking a few moments to think of Annie and close friends and family at this very sad time. Let us also reflect on those who are unable to join us this evening and those who are less fortunate than ourselves across the World.

Thank you. You will find a copy of the Agenda, Minutes of last year’s AGM and Treasurers report for your information on your table which we will refer to later in the evening. We hope you enjoy your meal.

CHAIRMANS REPORT – on Annie’s behalf

It’s lovely to see so many of you here tonight and we thank you for your continued support. We are very fortunate indeed to be able to continue to enjoy such a great sport amongst friends and ladies at various clubs across the County and we hope that you have enjoyed your games during the Tournaments.

There were 216 ladies who entered the Winter League Vets Tournament and 126 ladies have entered the Super Vets which is due to commence very soon. Both Tournaments continue to be well supported. Thank you, ladies.

Organising the leagues, collating the results and answering queries can take many hours of work and this is all done on a voluntary basis. This year for the Winter Vets we will be introducing a new electronic entry form which will hopefully help to reduce the time it takes to organise the Divisions. Please don’t worry, the Committee will help with any problems regarding the completion of the form. More details will follow in due course.

Annie would like to thank all of the committee who continue to do a great job, to (myself) Val Noble and Alison Trafford for the many hours of hard work organising and running the leagues. Liz Fazackerley who continues to do a great job as our secretary, Barbara Williams for running our website which has

recently been updated and Lynn Norwood our treasurer for keeping our accounts in order and to all of the Committee for helping to organise this evening.

After many years of being part of the Committee, both Lynn and myself (Val) have decided that the time has come to step down. I’m sure Lynn will agree with me that it’s been very rewarding over the years to see so many ladies participating in the Tournaments, enjoying playing their tennis whilst raising funds for various Charities. * Liz thanked Lynn & Val etc We would also like to thank Julie Turner who has kindly volunteered to take over as Treasurer and thanks also to Beulah Sell who has kindly volunteered to take over from myself as Tournament Director. Lynn & I will continue to support Julie and Beulah during the following months to ensure a smooth transition.

Last year the Committee organised a one-day charity tournament at the Leicestershire Tennis Club. This was a huge success and enjoyed by all followed by a delicious lunch. The Tournament raised an overall profit of £2079 and donations of £1,000 and £1,079 were given to The Laura Centre and LOROS respectively. We hope to run a similar Tournament in 2025.

This year the LVLTA will be making a donation of £1,000 to LOROS which I’m sure you will all agree is a very worthwhile hospice charity. We are very fortunate to have Rob Parkinson, Chief Executive Officer of LOROS here with us this evening as our guest speaker, who will be talking to us in a few moments.

During the last year, two of our members, Claire Bridges from Ashby Castle Tennis Club and Lucy Fairbrother from the Leicestershire Tennis Club sadly passed away. Claire and Lucy had participated in our Tournament’s for many years. I’m sure many of you would have played some great games against them over the years and I know they are and will continue to be missed by many.

We would also like to remember John Stew who sadly passed away last year. John was the Catering Manager here at the LCC and looked after us very well at this annual event for several years.

Before I hand over to Lynn for the Treasurers report I’d like to thank Steve for agreeing to take photographs for us again. Ladies, we will announce the winners and runners up together and bring the prizes to your tables where Steve will take your photograph. Please ask if you would like any additional photographs taken.

• I will now ask Lynn to give us the treasurers report.

Thank you, Lynn

• Can I have a proposer to adopt the report……. And a seconder

• And now the official election of Officers.

• As previously mentioned, Julie Turner has volunteered to join the Committee and take over as Treasurer. Could I please have a proposer? And seconder?

• Beulah Sell was unable to attend this evening but has also kindly volunteered to join the Committee and take over as Tournament Director. Could I have a proposer please? And a seconder?

Thank you to both of you and welcome to the Committee. If anybody is interested in joining the Committee, please let us know. It’s always good to have new faces.

Is there any other business?

I’d like to now close the meeting at

Thank you ladies, I’m delighted to introduce our guest speaker, Rob Parkinson.

Thank you Rob I’m confident all of us here tonight agree how valuable LOROS is in Leicestershire and Rutland. We appreciate you taking the time to join us this evening. It really was very interesting and extremely informative.

Thank you all for joining us this evening. We hope you’ve had an enjoyable evening and continue to enjoy your tennis. We wish you a safe journey home.

Chairmans Annual Message 2022

Chairman’s report

Good evening ladies and a big welcome to our 32nd LVLTA AGM, dinner and prize giving.

It’s so lovely to see so many of you and hope you all enjoy your meal and the wine provided. There are charity nomination forms on your tables and ask you to fill in your choice for the draw later.

Before we eat can we have a moment of reflection……

While we are here enjoying the pleasures of being together in celebration let us give thoughts to those who are experiencing the terrible atrocities of war in Ukraine, their suffering and fear is unimaginable. We must be grateful for the privileges we enjoy.

We hope you’ve all enjoyed your meal, and I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to John and his team for looking after us so well again.

We’ve certainly had an extraordinary 2 years, sadly we missed celebrating our 30th anniversary and had to hold that meeting via zoom. So here we are back at the Cricket Club and it’s really good to see so many of you. Covid is still with us but thanks to the amazing scientists we can hopefully learn to live reasonably safely with it. Sadly some ladies had to drop out today and we wish them well.

We are lucky to have a sport that we can play outdoors that has enabled us to continue relatively  safely and we trust that you have all had good matches, we thank you all for your continued support and welcome to new members.

Last year we had 98 entries for the super vets and 222 for the vets which we were pleased about. The leagues do take many hours to organise and so a HUGE thank you goes to Alison and Val for this. As always we do urge you to arrange your matches in good time to avoid late submissions.

I would like to thank all the committee who continue to do a stirling job, as already mentioned Val Noble and Alison Trafford for their hard work. Liz Fazackerley who took over from Lizzie Harris as another very competent secretary, Barbara Williams for her skills running our website and Lynn Norwood our treasurer and of course their roles in helping to successfully organise this evening.

This year we will be donating £300 each to 3 charities of your choice and we will be collecting your nomination forms and will do the draw before the prize giving.

Our regular photographer Steve has unfortunately succumbed to Covid but we are very pleased that Jeremy Trafford has kindly offered to help us out so thank you Jeremy and hope you appreciated Steve’s menu choice!  This year the prizes will be brought to your tables and Jeremy will come to you to take photos.

Lynn will now do the treasurers report.

I’m delighted to introduce our speaker tonight, Alis

Chairmans Annual Report 2021

Hello Ladies,

Ladies were welcomed to the 31st LVLTA AGM.

The AGM, although scheduled for April 29th at the Leicestershire County Cricket Club, was cancelled for the 2nd time, however, with a relaxing of the rules, the committee was able to meet in person. LVLTA members had been invited to join the AGM via zoom but none had accepted.

Last year we had 194 entries for the winter vets tournament, however, due to the
extraordinary circumstance causing lockdowns, and therefore no tennis , the wise decision to cancel the tournament was taken and all members were made aware that their entries will be carried forward unless anyone preferred a refund.
There were 112 entries for the Super Vets . 50 players withdrew due to the pandemic.
Winners and runners up all received their prizes.

At the zoom AGM in November the committee co-opted Liz Fazackerley as secretary and this appointment needed to be ratified by members. Julie Turner has proposed and Catherine Haworth has seconded.
The committee were thanked for all their hard work, Val Noble and Alison Trafford for
organizing the tournaments, Liz Fazackerley, our secretary, Barbara Williams for the website and Lynn Norwood, our treasurer.

The conclusion was to remain safe, enjoy lots of tennis ,and hopefully see lots of members next year, when all being well we can celebrate our 32nd AGM along with our dinner and prize giving.

Chairman’s report 30th AGM 2020

Annie Lucas welcomed the quorum to the 30th AGM. Instead of celebrating the 30th anniversary of the LVLTA in style who would have believed it would be held via a zoom meeting at 9.00 am on Friday, 6th November with a cup of coffee instead of a glass of wine!

It’s certainly been a challenging year but many of you have still been playing. Although our numbers are down for the entries for the Winter Vets leagues, we are delighted with the continued support. Last year 256 played in the Vets and 96 in the Supervets.  Thanks were given to Val Noble and Alison Trafford for their many hours of hard work.

Barbara Williams has done a great job with the LVLTA keeping players updated, and Lynn as our Treasurer has done sterling work.  Both were thanked for their contributions.

Sadly Lizzie Harris is standing down as Honorary Secretary after 7 years.  She has done an excellent job and will be missed on the committee! Liz Fazackerley has kindly volunteered to join us and take over Lizzie’s duties and has been confirmed as a committee member.

This year the LVLTA was nominated for the LTA Tennis Leicestershire Competition of the Year in recognition of its contributions to tennis. We were delighted to win the award which was a great achievement.

This year we have made 2 donations of £300.00, one to LOROS and the other to The Royal British Legion.

History Of The Super Vets Tournament

The Super Vets Tournament for ladies aged 60 and over started in 1997 and was played during the Summer months.  Gillian Davies-Jones, the secretary of the LVLTA organised the Tournament following a request at the AGM.

Some ladies who were over 60 wanted to continue to be part of the Association but did not want to play the full three sets under the rules of the Winter tournament, so a Summer tournament was organised to play matches, best of three sets.  In the first year 17 couples took part and we had three groups.

The title of the Tournament was originally known as the 60s Summer Tournament but was later changed to omit the age and became known as the Super Vets Tournament.  It runs from May to October and the deciding third set is now played as a Championship Tie Break.

The current competition has 61 couples in nine groups with prizes for the winners and runners-up in each group.
